The constipation was still a problem, but was more controllable and not as painful.
Then, about ten years ago, my life unexpectedly changed. As I got out of bed one November morning, my legs were numb. I believed that I maybe had twisted in a funny way while lifting some weighty objects the previous day. But, over the subsequent month, the lack of sensation in my legs got worse, and it traveled up to around my waist. I had some days where I couldn’t walk. The doctors believed I was either starting MS or a virus had attacked my spinal column. Since they found no MS legions on my brain, they decided on the latter. To relieve my symptoms, the doctors gave me five days of super concentrated intravenous steroids that really created chaos in my system. Because I had very little feeling below the waist, my intestines didn’t work very well. The consequence — the constipation was significantly worse. So, for the last 10 years, I’ve been trying different combinations of natural strategies to urge my body to get rid of waste more efficiently so that I will stay healthy.
Here is an outline of how I have attempted to cure constipation naturally:
1. Eat fruits and vegetables; heaps of them! We hear this all the time for our general health from dietary professionals and physicians. That’s because most vegetables and fruits are crammed with natural fiber, and fiber is what makes our intestines move the food and waste through to be expelled without clogging up the plumbing. I eat principally fresh or frozen veggies and fruits. I don’t eat much of the canned or processed varieties because I think nearly all of the natural fiber is removed in the processing. 2. Scale back the intake of dairy products and red meats. I’ve cut way back on dairy products and red meats. I’d much rather stay away from that wonderful ice cream sundae now than reap the result of being constipated and having to spend an hour in the bathroom when I have much more important things to do with my life.
3. Reduce or completely purge most processed foods from your diet and eat as gluten free as possible. I generally end up with a little wheat in my foods, however I really try not to. (That’s not an simple feat nowadays!!!) While I understand wheat is a natural product, it becomes unnatural when it is processed. I’ve observed when I keep the wheat to a minimum or not eat any, the constipation is less of a problem. When I eat more processed foods, which tends to be served in restaurants and avoiding wheat becomes a true challenge, the constipation is worse over the next couple of days.
4. Eat healthy nuts. I have also added healthy nuts like almonds, walnuts, pecans and pistachios to my diet. These are a good supply of natural fiber, and seem to aid the ability of the intestines to get rid of the waste.
5. Take Vitamin E and Fish Oil every day. These are healthy fats that seem to assist my digestive system and help to cut back the constipation I have. These two items also appear to have another advantage of serving to my skin keep its natural luster and suppleness.
6. Take Vitamin D3 every day — a minimum of 1000 mg. Since we reside in a northern climate where it snows five months of the year and the sun is low within the sky during the winter, we do not get enough Vitamin D3 naturally. It’s a naturally occurring vitamin if a person gets enough sun; so adding it as supplement has seemed to help scale back my constipation and it’s enhanced my general health in the winter months.
7. Take fiber tablets and stool softener every day. My husband and I take two fiber tablets and one stool softener each day. This one factor alone has changed the life of my husband. He has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). One of the outcomes of IBS will be acute constipation, which he has had. But, when he started taking fiber and the stool softener each day, his IBS nearly vanished as did his constipation. He’s currently thankful to be “regular” provided he doesn’t eat processed foods in large quantities. The fiber tablets and stool softener helps me as well, and although my constipation continues to be with me, it’s not as much as it used to be. FYI, fiber also comes in the form of powder that you can combine with water. I won’t name specific fiber powder type products, but ask your pharmacist about it if you’d rather “drink” your fiber than take a pill.
8. Drink a lot of water. I strive to drink as much water as I can. I know the “official” recommendations are 8 to 10 8 oz. glasses every day. This total is a good amount to shoot for, but sometimes I drink more than 8 glasses of water every, which doesn’t appear to hurt me. Sure I have to urinate more, however you know what? The water helps cut back my constipation, and what could be more natural than drinking lots of water each day?
9. Exercise every day; or a minimum of 5 days every week. Keeping my body active through exercise invariably assists my intestines to function correctly with less constipation allowing waste and food to travel through my intestines. A number of years ago, I visited my grandma when she was residing in an assisted living facility. She was almost one hundred years old and complaining about health challenges. I asked her if she exercised often and she answered sarcastically “Oh, you think that is the solution for everything!” Well, I do believe it! I have seen recurring exercise do some remarkable things for my husband, who was very overweight and lost over 150 pounds simply by beginning to exercise and amend his diet. I do believe exercise will help enhance most everything in our body, soul and spirit.
10. Attempt taking probiotics. I had been eating yogurt with probiotics as another natural method to assist my digestion and keep the intestines moving. But, since I don’t tolerate dairy products very well, I have switched to probiotic tablets or “pearls.” (There are plenty of brands out there.)
